Does Udyam registration include Startup India benefits?

By CS Deepa Sharma Updated

Udyam registration does not include Startup India benefits. It records that the enterprise is micro, small, or medium. Recognition as a startup is a separate application. Neither step, by itself, cuts the tax rate or sanctions a loan.

What does Udyam registration do?

From 1 April 2025 an enterprise is classified on investment in plant and machinery or equipment and on turnover. Both limits apply. The classification page states the test. Udyam does not carry a government fee. A GSTIN is entered if the enterprise already has one. The registration does not make GST compulsory.

Class Investment Turnover
Micro Up to ₹2.5 crore Up to ₹10 crore
Small Up to ₹25 crore Up to ₹100 crore
Medium Up to ₹125 crore Up to ₹500 crore

The certificate is not a tax-rate cut, a collateral-free loan, an electricity exemption, or a patent subsidy. A procurement preference for micro and small enterprises, where a ministry policy grants one, is that policy. It is not created by printing the certificate. Filing of the half-yearly return for delayed payments is on the MSME-1 page.

What is a separate startup recognition?

Startup India recognition is granted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. It is not the Udyam portal. The entity, its age, its turnover, and whether it was formed by splitting an existing business are tested on the recognition page. A partnership firm can be an MSME and can also be examined for recognition. The two registers do not complete each other.

A tax treatment that depends on recognition, including angel tax, is discussed on the angel tax page. It is not a line on the Udyam certificate.

Which schemes are not automatic?

Seed funding, accelerator support, and women-entrepreneur schemes are applications. An incubator or a ministry selects the applicant. Holding an Udyam certificate, or a startup recognition, does not mean the amount has been sanctioned. The June 2020 emergency credit line is closed. That closure is on the 2020 credit-line page.

Frequently asked questions

Four questions cover tax, the Udyam fee, credit, and the startup age test.

Does Udyam registration cut the tax rate?

No. The certificate classifies the enterprise. It does not change income tax or GST.

Is there a fee for Udyam?

No. Udyam registration does not carry a government fee.

Does the certificate sanction a loan?

No. A lender decides a loan. A scheme that offers credit is a separate application, and it is not paid out because the Udyam certificate exists.

Is a ten-year-old company still a startup?

Recognition looks at the age from incorporation, the form of the entity, turnover, and whether the business was split out of an existing one. The test is on the startup recognition page.
